Desert Rose
Marek Denko
3D artwork
Description
Marek Denko is a Slovakia 3D artist and he was born in 1980 in former Czechoslovakia in the small town in the central part of Slovak republic. The image above is one of his art work which is called 'Deser Rose'. Also, it was inspired by the Mad Max trilogy and the post-Nuclear War game Fallout.
'Deser Rose' is a 3D artwork which made in 3D max, photoshop and Vray. It was started in January 2008. Marek spent on it parts of his free time (about two to three weeks) during 4 months.
From this image, we can see a buggy in a desert. We can also know this buggy is the main thing in this image, that is because the size of this buggy is very big compare to other things.
Marek states that 'there is no big deep point in just a create heavy high detailed buggy in desert environment.' 'This project some kind of skill presentation for fancy car renderings but using old rusty mad fallout buggy.'
Analysis
'Desert Rose' is a very realistic artwork. When i first saw it, i thought it was a photograph. It is not easy to make a 3D artwork looks like a phtotgraph, so it is not hard to see how good skills that Marek has. This artwork also shows us that Karek is a very scrupulous artistic. He added lots of details to make this piece looks real.In order to make this piece looks real, Karek added lots of details on those things, especially on the buggy. As we can see, there are lots of dust on the tyres and the rest parts of the buggy, there are also some rust on the iron parts of the buggy, etc. All of those details make this piece looks real.
When I look at this image, the first thing came into my eyes is the buggy. One of the reason is that the buggy is the bigest thing in this image and another reason is that the focal point is on the buggy.
Through this image, i have a feeling that it is a retro style image. That is because the colour of this image is not very high contrast, also because the corners of this image is darker then the centre.
Interpretation
Although Karek states that this artwork some kind of skill presentation, i still can feel there is a story behind the image. This piece let me imagine that there was a guy traveled to the wild by the buggy and because the desert is too dry, he got off the buggy and tried to find some water.
Judgment
In general, i think it is a quite successful artwork, especially the details in this piece. Both lighting and texturing are very excellent in this piece.
I got lots of ideas about how to do texturing and colour correcting from 'Desert Rose'.

Feng Zhu
Digital painting
Description
This is a digital painting did by Feng Zhu.
This image has foreground, midground and distant view. The things in midground are the main things in this image because there are a lot of details on the midground things.
In the midground, there is a big eagle sculpture on the right hand side of this image and a soldier with red cloak on the left hand side of this image and some soldiers without cloak in the middle of this image.
The red cloak soldier and the other soldiers are facing to each others. Also, the light is shooting on the red cloak soldier.
Also, the big eagle sculpture is looking down to the soldiers and spreading its wings.
Analysis
When i first saw this painting, my eyes are led to the big eagle sculpture and the red cloak soldier. The reasons that are below:
- The eagle sculpture is so big
- The soldier is wearing a red cloak and red is a quite showy colour.
- The main light is shotting on the red cloak soldier.
In the midground, there is a big eagle sculpture on the right hand side, it makes the right hand side have more weight than the left hand side in the midground, but this image still looks balance, that is because Feng added some tall buildings on the left hand side in the distant view and these buildings bring weight to the left hand side. Also, because the main light is shooting on the left hand side, it also gives some weight to left hand side.
In addition, this painting gives me a feeling that it is very magnificent. That is because the pose of the eagle sculpture: it is spreading its wings, i can feel power from its wings. It is also because the main colour of this painting is quite dark, it make me feel solemnity.
Interpretation
I think the main idea of this painting is showing audience a very imposing war between one soldier and others.
Through looking at the style of the buildings and the clothes that those soldiers wearing, this concept desigh might did for a ancient war film.
Judgment
Over all, this is a very high level concept desigh.
It is a balanced artwork, so from this painting i can learn how to put buildings to make images lokk balanced.
I also can learn how to lead audiences' eyes to the main things/people.
Also, it is a very creative artwork. That is anther thing i can learn from this painting.
Beauty
Haibo Zhu
Digital Painting
Description
This is a digital drew by Haibo Zhu.
There is only a woman on this painting and no background.
The woman's head has more details than her body. Also, she wear a flower on her head.
When Haibo created this painting, he did not draw the lines first, but paint the colour straightly. He spent most time on the face and he only used 2 lines to show audiences when the back and shoulder are.
Analysis
This is a very clean painting, because there no unused things in it.
In order to show the woman's morbidezza to audiences, the colour Haibo used are not very much.
A soft light is shooting from top left hand side, it makes this woman looks beautiful.
Also, the flower is another reason to make the woman looks beautiful.
Interpretation
I think the reason of Haibo created this painting is that he wanted to create something beautiful. I got this conjecture is because this woman in the painting is beautiful, also because the way how Haibo creates his paintings: most of his paintings are based on real pictures, but Haibo does not want to just copy those photographs, so he adds his own feeling of those photographs and his own aestherics to his paintings.
I think he was aiming to make his painting more beautiful than original photograph.
Judgment
Overall, this is a very successful human portrait painting.
The artist has a very good drawing skill. He can use very simple colours and lines to draw such good looking painting.
The things i can learn from this painting are: 1, how to use colours, especially how to use colours show different tones. 2, how to paint female portrait. How to paint females' morbidezza.
